My Internship
I will be interning in the spring with American General Media. In the course of my internship I will learn the essentials behind the business of radio, learn the workplace norms of American General Media, and the elements of a well advertising logo for a sticker. My mentor will take me beneath his wing during the creation and broadcasting of radio shows in order to show me how the radio we hear is made.
Project Proposal
I will be interning at American General Media this spring for my LINK internship. This company is responsible for many popular radio stations in the region including Kiss Country and 99.X. I will be interning mostly in the field of broadcasting and radio show creation and learning the essentials of radio, but my focal point for study and project creation will be graphic design.
My mentor, Cody Mellor, is very experienced in radio and made it to his current position by starting as an intern himself. Cody creates shows, broadcasts events live, and maintains input on the content of 99.X, one of the more popular radio stations in the area. As a former intern, Cody knows what a mentor in the field should be and will demonstrate those qualities as best he can. His professional feedback will help me to refine my project and also help me to better myself as an employee.
I came to American General Media in search of opportunities to pursue work in the field of graphic design, but encountered much more intriguing things upon taking a tour of the workplace. While interning and learning the essentials to creating and maintaining a radio station I will also be independently designing a new logo for the station, practicing my interest in graphic design. In the future I wish to use this experience to help me generally as an employee and in my ideal minor in college of graphic design.
The logo I will design for 99.X will serve as my project in my LINK internship. This logo may be applied to stickers, T-shirts, and other advertising mediums in order to aid the company in advertising. This project will benefit the image of the company and help me to further develop my skills in Photoshop.
I will complete this project partially during my time at the worksite and partially in my free time. Throughout the course of my LINK internship I will receive feedback on my project and learn what it takes to create an effective logo for a radio station. When I encounter issues I will address them accordingly.
My LINK internship will surely benefit me as a student, employee, radio expert, and as an artist, helping me to develop new skills daily. This will be a fruitful experience for both me and my mentor and hopefully help me to narrow the choices I have for careers.

Mentor Interview
What process did you go through in the radio industry to attain your current position?
I began as an intern at 17 at a radio station in salt lake. I switched stations once in salt lake then eventually moved to Memphis, Tennessee to work at another station for 2 months. I then moved to Myrtle Beach and enjoyed it thoroughly. I was off the air after that until I moved to Durango in 2009 to work in my current position.
What responsibilities does your career entail?
Production of commercials, weather and my show, I’m an on air personality, I do imaging for the station. I also do general required roles at the radio station such as downloading music and managing the play log for the station.
How has radio changed since you started?
A lot. When I started we were working with mostly cds and other technology which is obsolete in the industry now. Everything has become digital, instead of the older things I used to us I now solely depend on the internet for my show content and downloading music along with other tasks.
Everything is computerized now in radio. The internet has also changed the radio in regards to social networking and interactivity. Sites like Facebook have helped us gain publicity and connect with our fans. The music has also changed, the top 40 today is definitely not the same as when I started.
Whats your least favorite thing about your position?
Politics. Enough said.
What sort of education process do people go through to be in your career position normally?
None really necessarily. There are college programs but most radio DJs would laugh at the thought of paying for a program like these because internships are free and practically the same thing. Working in a real world environment nis much more useful in this career field.
